Description: Top 20s Live Above the Line: How Our Thinking Governs Our Experience
This session focuses on becoming aware of our thinking so we know when it is working and when it is not working. It explores (1) the conditions that come up in our life that invite us to go Below the Line, (2) indicators telling us when we are Below, (3) how to handle Below the Line experiences with more grace and dignity and (4) how to trampoline back Above the Line.
Top 20s Create a Top 20 Culture
Top 20s create a culture that develops the potential of students and colleagues. This session presents four components of a Top 20 culture: (1) help others succeed, (2) communicate ‘you matter,’ (3) honor the absent, and (4) see the problem, own the problem. It also presents a tool for assessing the degree to which these components exist in a culture.

Description: The 11 Principles training uses a framework for improving school climate and culture through a school-wide emphasis on character education. This highly interactive training is geared toward school teams, however, individuals are welcome to attend.

Each team will receive an 11 Principles Sourcebook - a comprehensive resource that provides in-depth information on each of the principles, along with ideas and strategies for implementation, a facilitation guide, key resources and worksheets to be used for staff development. If your team includes members from different schools, we recommend you order additional Sourcebooks for each school.

Description: The South Central Perkins Consortium is gearing up to plan for an exciting new initiative, this year’s pilot for a 9th-grade Career Exploration Program. This program will include multiple encounters by students and their teacher and support persons, to experience a hand-on activity and overview of technical college programs in each of 6 career fields, AND, to receive “saturated” guidance, including a parental component. Whew! A tall order, but only one component of our need to support counselors in their guidance for all students, grades 9-12, to be college and career ready.

The Perkins grant does have some funding set aside to support the advisement activity as part of this initiative, which may include need to develop materials or a presentation/video, etc. But more importantly, leadership from MACAC, the Minnesota Association for College Admission Counseling, shares in our excitement for this initiative, and has developed resource to provide training to high school counselors as part of their own “Road Show” initiative. Wow—we’re all on fire here…

In order to meet YOUR needs for counseling this next year, in your local program and in consideration of the 9th-Grade Exploration program, representatives from MACAC would like to invite a few interested counselors to the table on August 18th, from 9:30—11:30 a.m. here at South Central Service Cooperative, to serve as a Steering Committee to shape an agenda for delivering training to area counselors.

I am still excited by last year’s growing of a Community of Practice (CoP) for Counselors, including regional WorkForce partners, and look forward to this year’s first meeting on September 27th. One consideration for a “Road Show” event could be to meet in the afternoon following the CoP, in that many of will likely already be in attendance. I also imagine that discussion will include the new Career Exploration program: What should it look like? What guidance components can be included to assure that all students,
