Description: SCSC and the Minnesota Department of Education School Safety Technical Assistance Center are offering a one-day workshop on how to use student data in district improvement planning, focusing on improving school climate. This workshop will explore the link between chronic absenteeism and school climate, as they relate to academic achievement. Participants will be given the opportunity to use your district’s attendance and Minnesota Student Survey data to better understand issues that may be effecting student achievement. Those attending will leave the workshop with concrete tools for implementing their own improvement process that incorporates school climate data into academic goal-setting.

Comment: This workshop was developed through a collaborative effort of assessment and content experts from both MDE and Pearson, Minnesota’s testing service provider. The intent is to reinforce the value of Minnesota’s assessments as a way to measure student success in comprehending concepts presented to them. Educators can understand how assessments are created and how they assess specific standards of learning comprehension. The presentation will conclude with educators providing input and feedback, which will be used to influence the decisions made on the new teacher-friendly interface on MDE’s website, which will be available districts in the near future.

Description: This two day course is designed for physical and occupational therapists working with children who have neurological or developmental disorders where hypotonia is a significant component, such as Down Syndrome, DCD, genetic disorders and some forms of Cerebral Palsy. Using the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health- Children and Youth Version ( ICF-CY) the motor and sensory impairments associated with hypotonia will be defined and described, along with the effect hypotonia has on function and participation in a school environment. Lab and problem solving experiences will include NDT facilitation, as well as combining NDT with sensory strategies to improve postural control, stability strength and motor learning related to specific functional and participation outcomes. Strategies for use in the classroom will be covered including equipment and adjuncts such as compression garments.

Description: This workshop will enable teams to identify the critical features that create a results-based focus by using data to improve student learning. Participants will practice protocols used to examine student data and reflect on classroom work. Through practice and discussion, teams will inquire into and discuss changes in instructional practices that lead to increased student achievement. Participants will identify the critical learning team features, apply and discuss protocols for adult work to set goals and plan instruction, and apply and analyze protocols for examining student work.

Description: Rethinking Discipline Strategies to Improve Climate (9 a.m.-12 p.m.): Behavior problems clearly disrupt teaching and learning. Because of this, discipline and classroom management are daily topics at every school. Increasingly, however, concerns have been raised about inequities in applying consequences for misbehavior, and there is a growing appreciation of how traditional approaches to discipline can have a negative impact on school climate. During the session, participants will gain a better understanding of how discipline policies and practices impact school climate and be provided tools that can be used to enhance discipline policies to improve school climate. Appropriate audience includes district and building leadership, school board members and/or school administrators.

Foundations of Restorative Practices (12:30 p.m.-3:30p.m.): This session will provide an overview of restorative justice principles and theory, restorative practices in schools, implementation guidance and a review of resources. Appropriate audience includes district and building leadership, lead teachers, school support staff and/or school administrators.
